Thyroid Cancer Treatment

Overview

Thyroid Cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck. The thyroid plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, and overall hormonal balance. Although thyroid cancer is relatively uncommon compared to other cancers, it is often highly treatable, especially when detected at an early stage.

Most thyroid cancers grow slowly and may not cause noticeable symptoms in the initial stages. However, as the disease progresses, it can lead to visible swelling in the neck, difficulty in swallowing, or changes in voice. Dr. Chaitra Shetty specialises in the diagnosis and surgical management of thyroid cancers, ensuring precise tumor removal while preserving surrounding structures such as nerves and parathyroid glands.

With advancements in diagnostic tools, minimally invasive surgical techniques, and post-operative care, patients can achieve excellent outcomes. A personalized treatment approach ensures optimal cancer control while maintaining normal thyroid function and overall quality of life.

What is Thyroid Cancer?

Thyroid Cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the thyroid gland grow uncontrollably, forming a malignant tumor. There are several types of thyroid cancer, including papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic carcinoma, each with different characteristics and treatment approaches.

The most common types, papillary and follicular thyroid cancers, tend to grow slowly and respond well to treatment. Risk factors may include exposure to radiation, family history, hormonal imbalances, and certain genetic conditions. Early diagnosis through ultrasound, biopsy, and blood tests plays a key role in effective treatment.

Treatment typically involves surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland (thyroidectomy), sometimes followed by radioactive iodine therapy or hormone therapy. The focus is on complete removal of cancer while preserving essential functions such as voice and calcium regulation.
