Laryngeal Cancer Treatment

Overview

Laryngeal Cancer is a type of head and neck cancer that develops in the larynx, commonly known as the voice box. The larynx plays a vital role in breathing, speaking, and protecting the airway during swallowing. Cancer in this region can significantly affect voice quality, breathing patterns, and overall communication ability.

This condition is often associated with risk factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and exposure to environmental irritants. Early diagnosis is crucial, as many laryngeal cancers can be treated effectively while preserving voice function if detected in the initial stages. Dr. Chaitra Shetty specialises in advanced surgical management of laryngeal cancer with a strong focus on organ preservation and functional recovery.

Modern treatment approaches combine precise surgical techniques, laser-assisted procedures, and rehabilitation therapies to ensure optimal outcomes. The goal is to remove the cancer completely while maintaining voice quality, airway safety, and overall quality of life.

What is Laryngeal Cancer?

Laryngeal Cancer refers to the uncontrolled growth of malignant cells in the tissues of the larynx. Most cases are squamous cell carcinomas that arise from the lining of the voice box. Depending on the exact location, laryngeal cancer is classified into supraglottic, glottic, and subglottic cancers.

Each type may present with different symptoms and requires a tailored treatment approach. Early-stage cancers may be treated with minimally invasive techniques, while advanced cases may require a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.

Treatment often focuses on preserving the larynx and voice whenever possible. In advanced cases, procedures such as partial or total laryngectomy may be required, followed by voice rehabilitation and supportive care to restore communication abilities.
