Head & Neck Oncology Surgeon
Oral Cancer is a type of head and neck cancer that develops in the tissues of the mouth, including the lips, gums, tongue, inner cheeks, roof of the mouth (palate), and floor of the mouth. It is one of the most common cancers in India, often associated with lifestyle factors such as tobacco chewing, smoking, alcohol consumption, and poor oral hygiene.
This condition can significantly affect essential functions such as speaking, eating, and swallowing, and may also impact facial appearance if not treated in time. Dr. Chaitra Shetty specialises in the comprehensive management of oral cancer, offering advanced surgical treatment combined with reconstruction techniques to restore both function and aesthetics.
Early detection plays a critical role in successful treatment outcomes. With modern surgical techniques, imaging, and rehabilitation support, patients can achieve effective cancer control while maintaining a good quality of life.
Oral Cancer refers to the uncontrolled growth of malignant cells within the oral cavity. Most oral cancers are squamous cell carcinomas, arising from the lining of the mouth. These cancers may start as small lesions or ulcers and gradually grow into larger masses if left untreated.
Common risk factors include tobacco use (smoking or chewing), excessive alcohol intake, human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, and long-term irritation within the mouth. Early-stage oral cancer is often painless, which can delay diagnosis, making awareness of symptoms extremely important.
Treatment typically involves surgical removal of the tumor, often followed by reconstructive procedures to restore speech, chewing, and facial structure. In some cases, radiation therapy or chemotherapy may also be required depending on the stage of the disease.
